Re-made Badges by MB Developments

One thing that we have been busy with recently with is our range of badges.
Obviously Innocenti stopped making badges 30 years ago and there has been a demand for re-made badges.
Whilst getting standard type badges remade we took the opportunity to get "non-standard" badges remade too, ones that can very subtly reveal exactly what spec of engine lurks underneath the panel work.
Some other suppliers have jumped on the bandwagon of making badges and it is the poor quality of these items that has given re-made badges a bad name.
These badges are often pressed out of flimsy metal, poorly finished and do not fit.

It is probably worth us going over how we make a badge, this illustrates how much attention we pay and also why it is worth paying that extra little bit for our badges.

We will use the Li200 badge as an example.
This was one of Ian's first suggestions when he started at MB Developments. Several people had fitted new Indian GP200 engines into their Li 125 and 150 scooters.
They wanted a badge to reflect the new engine size.

The process starts with a local jeweller, who makes us a master for each badge.
To do this we needed to send him an Li125 badge (for an example of the Li and the spacing of the pins) and a TV200 badge (for an example of the 200 digits).
Past experience told us that when you cast something, it shrinks when it cools down - basic science.
So our jeweller makes the masters 3% bigger than they need to be to allow for shrinkage.
He makes us a master of that badge which we send to get cast.
The casters make a mold for that badge and we get the master back. These are now redundant and so Mark got them gold plated and mounted on the wall as a nice ornament at home!
The casting people cast the badges in brass and send them to us.
They always need a bit of tidying up to remove spurs that are part of the casting process.
This is always done in-house as we all know what a badge should look like so we don't trim the wrong bit!

After the badges are tidied up they are sent for chroming, when we get them back a quick check and we start selling them!

As time goes on this page will build up into an illustrated list of all the various badges we do.
A text based list of the badges will be put here shortly

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2004

Due to stock control problems we have replaced our "home made" Special, Thin Lambretta and Fat Lambretta badges with ones made by Casa Lambretta. We believe them to be as good as ours. The Lambretta side panel badges have always been Casa ones, along with badges that are obviously not cast metal like the plastic shield horncast badge and rear frame badges.

When ordering badges we will be glad to confirm the origin of badges if this is an issue for you.
