Wheel Rims for Lambretta

1. There are different wheel rims available, which is best?

You have two choices, standard and wide rims (The wide rims available vary in width but are basically the same).

Use this combination to give the best handling:

    1. Front and rear, standard rims.
    2. Front standard rims and rear wide rims.

Using a wide rim on the front usually makes the bike snake around like you keep riding on cats eyes, this doesn't happen with the standard rim on the front.

2. What effect does a wide rim have?

A wide rim effectively makes the tyre have more area in contact with the ground (called footprint), this gives more grip. A wider rim effectively lowers the profile of the tyre, so the rolling circumference alters and so does gearing which can also be an advantage.

3. Which rims fit with Schwalbe tyres?
All Schwalbe tyres fit on standard and wide rims. They also fit tubeless rims but these need fitting by tyre professionals, it is not a job MB Developments or lambretta spares undertake.
4. Does a wide rim fit the scooter?

There are different ways to fit a tyre onto a Lambretta.

  1. A wide rim with a 3.50:10 should fit straight onto a Lambretta Ok.
  2. With 100mm wide tyres, assemble the wheel with no air pressure in the tyre and pump it up once fitted to the hub.
  3. With 100mm wide tyres, remove 2-3 fins on the hub, along with a small part of the mag housing so the tyre slides in easily with full air pressure (sometimes the rear mudguard also needs trimming to do this). This is well worth doing as swapping tyres at the side of the road after a puncture can be a real pain. Click to see a hub modified to ease tyre changes.
